Ο Γιώργος Σαπουντζής γεννήθηκε το 1976 στην Αθήνα. Την περίοδο 1998-2002 σπούδασε στην ΑΣΚΤ με δάσκαλο τον Γιώργο Λάππα και στη συνέχεια πραγματοποίησε μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές στο Berlin University of the Arts στο εργαστήριο της Rebecca Horn (2002-2004). Ζει και εργάζεται στο Βερολίνο.
Η καλλιτεχνική πρακτική του περιλαμβάνει ένα ευρύ φάσμα εικαστικών μέσων: performance, γλυπτική, σχέδιο και βίντεο. Έχοντας ως αφετηρία του τα δημόσια μνημεία δημιουργεί project τα οποία συνδυάζουν τον ιδιωτικό με τον δημόσιο χώρο και τα οποία δεν εστιάζουν στην ερμηνεία μονάχα του μνημείου αλλά στη σημασία του σε ομάδες ανθρώπων. Παράλληλα, οι εγκαταστάσεις και οι performances του συνδυάζουν στοιχεία από διαφορετικούς τομείς: το θέατρο, την ποίηση και τις τελετουργικές πράξεις. Αντίστοιχα, στα γλυπτικά του έργα χρησιμοποιεί εύκαμπτα υλικά, όπως φύλλα και ράβδους αλουμινίου, χρωματιστά υφάσματα, καρφίτσες και κόμπους, σκοινιά και εφημερίδες, των οποίων ο όγκος μπορεί να μειωθεί και μεταφέρονται εύκολα.

Yorgos Sapountzis was born in 1976 in Athens. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1998-2002) under the tutelage of George Lappas, followed by postgraduate studies at the Berlin University of the Arts in the workshop of Rebecca Horn (2002-2004). He lives and works in Berlin.
His artistic practice encompasses a wide range of visual media: performance, sculpture, drawing and video. Taking public monuments as his starting point, he creates projects that combine private and public space and that focus not only on the interpretation of the monument but on its significance to groups of people. At the same time, his installations and performances combine elements from different fields: theatre, poetry and ritual acts. Similarly, in his sculptural works he uses flexible materials such as aluminium sheets and rods, coloured fabrics, pins and knots, ropes and newspapers, whose volume can be reduced and are easily transportable.
He held a series of solo exhibitions, among them: Forgotten Tactics, Isabella Bortolozzi Gallery (Berlin, 2006); After Electricity, ART BASEL 2008, STATEMENT, Loraini Alimantiri Gazonrouge (Basel, 2008); Horizon Drop, Hermes und der Pfau (Stuttgart, 2009); Pre-Bellevue, Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Castilla y León (Spain, 2010)- Charleroi, Loraini Alimantiri Gazonrouge (Athens, 2010)- Sculptures and Mirrors, Freymond Guth Fine Arts (Zurich, 2011)- Apparere, Fondazione Morra Greco (Naples, 2011)- Fast Cast, Isabella Bortolozzi Gallery (Berlin, 2011) etc. α.
